![]() ![]() ![]() Six young male gymnasts from Gymnastics Mississauga competed against other athletes from across Ontario this past weekend for the honour of competing at the 2010 Ontario Youth Winter Games being held March 4-7, 2010. The Ontario Winter Games is a unique multi-sport event showcasing 27 different sports, that provides young athletes with development and competitive opportunities that prepare them for national and international competitions. The six athletes from Gymnastics Mississauga, by far the largest number of athletes from a single club, made it onto the teams that will be sent to the games. They are: Matthew Govia, Alex Korhonen, Gianmarco Mastrantoni, Casey Rogan, Alexandre Hurt, and Mark Syptak. All of the boys are National level athletes ranging in age from 11 years to 16 yrs, training from 20-24 hours per week. Gymnastics Mississauga is a hotbed of young talent and boasts the largest number of National level male gymnasts of any club in Ontario. They currently have five members on the Canadian National team. Head coach Chris Foo was thrilled to have two of his National team members, Jaylan Birl and Tariq Dower, on a 4-man team that represented Canada at the Junior Pan American games in Brazil last month, placing 4th overall. The club hopes to have a number of their athletes also represented at the future 2015 Pan American games in Toronto. "I'm reallly excited to be going to the Ontario Winter Games , It will be like a mini-Olympics." says Casey Rogan, 11 yrs old, of Gymnastics Mississauga. It will be his first time competing at such a large multi-sport event such as this, gaining valuable experience. 7,500 visitors are expected to visit Muskoka and Sudbury to see the Games. It is estimated that the Games will generate between $3 and $4 million in economic benefits for the local economy. The Ontario Games is a program of the Ministry of Health Promotion and delivered by the Sport Alliance of Ontario. More information on the games can be found at www.2010ontariowintergames.ca |
